HONOLULU – The California men’s tennis team got the new year off to a good start, winning eight of 10 games on day one of the Hawaii Invitational on Thursday. Senior Gold Bears Yuta Kikuchi and Philippe hjorth won in singles and doubles at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Bears were 6-1 in singles, including Kikuchi’s 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Hawaii’s Blaz Seric, Hjorth’s 6-2, 6-3 win over Wally Thayne. from BYU and the newcomer. Derrick Chen 6-2, 6-2 triumph for Matheus Ferreira Leite of BYU.
Cal went 2-1 in doubles, with Hjorth and Michael wright ahead of Simao Telo Alves and Kilian Maitre from Hawaii, 8-3, and Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck defeating Andre Ilagan and Axel Labrunie of Hawaii, 8-4.
Day two of the Hawaii Invitational begins Friday with doubles at 2:30 p.m. HT, followed by singles at around 3:00 p.m. HT.
