William and Mary spoil Seahawks senior night


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior forward Nathan Messer scored the game-winning goal in the 106th minute to give William and Mary a 2-1 double-overtime victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association men’s football action at UNCW football stadium on Saturday night .

The victory lifted the tribe’s record to 7-6-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the CAA. UNCW, meanwhile, fell to 9-6-1 on aggregate with an identical 4-3-0 mark in the league.

Messer gave the victory to William & Mary with 4:47 left in the second overtime period with his fourth goal of the season. He ran a long run on the sideline and slipped past a UNCW defender before slipping a shot past the junior goalie Gabriel Perrotta.

UNCW took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute as a fifth-year senior midfielder Jacob evans sent a long exit pass to the junior striker Jalen Anderson, who scored from a shot inside the penalty area in front of junior Connor Andrews.

The Seahawks held the lead until the dying seconds of regulation when the senior midfielder Jean Eberle sent a shot towards the goal which was deflected by a UNCW defender, scoring his first tally of the season.

Perrotta made four saves in the loss for UNCW, who outscored William and Mary by a 13-9 margin. Andrews made three saves in the tribe’s victory.

UNCW and William & Mary, who are tied for fourth in the CAA rankings, will close the regular season on Saturday, November 6. The Seahawks travel to Hofstra at noon as the tribe welcomes Elon.
